My Grandmother's Chair brought to you by Jon Hammond

My Grandmother's Chair brought to you by Jon Hammond

This is one of 4 kitchen chairs that belonged to my dear Grandma for many years. I used to sit my tuchas down on those chairs and enjoy her delicious soup and coffee cake she used to make for me. I have a lot of good memories in that chair, so when the back of it started getting a little shaky, but still firm on it's legs my Mom decided it was time to finally say goodbye to this one, now there is only one of the original 4 left.
I decided to bring this chair to a good neighborhood, maybe someone will adopt the chair and take it in to their nice home, so here you can see it sitting for the last time, I sat on it for a wile and remembered the good times in the chair and there it is folks, my Grandmother's Chair!

Tech Talk from Jon Hammond: Playing Hammond organ through Fender Tube Amps

Jon Hammond:
I own 2 Hammond B3 organs and Leslie speakers, unfortunately they will not fit in a taxi cab, so these days I play most of my road gigs using either my Hammond XK-1 organ or my Hammond XK-3 organ and I like to play them through my vintage Fender tube amps, I have 2 1965 Fender amps, a piggy back Fender Band-Master with stock factory 12" Jensen speakers and my Twin Reverb with original JBL Speakers option. The Twin was formerly owned by John McFee when he was in Clover and Flying Circus and at that time he had it maintained by Randall Smith of Prune who started Boogie Amp company. I purchased the amp in 1981, it still has Flying Circus stencil on top of the amp.
My Band-Master is now maintained by Scott Robinson who is Vice President of CHRS California Historical Radio Society.
I also have a 150 watt Music Man HD-212 hybrid amp that is a monster.
Jon's amps: Fender Band-Master Piggyback Amp:

Fender Twin Reverb with factory JBL Speakers

Jon's amps with Hammond XK-1 organ at home, always practice while watching TV and listening to the radio for independence real-world simulation, split the brain:

Puerto Rico's new standard-Westin Ocean Villas at Rio Mar Beach

Jon Hammond HOT Links

The $210 million Westin Rio Mar Beach, Puerto Rico

Westin Ocean Villas at Rio Mar Beach raise the bar in resort luxury as published by Press Publications, March 14, 2001 by Jon Hammond Travel correspondent

Jon Hammond on assignment:RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico --

Destination: The Westin Ocean Villas at Rio Mar Beach, Puerto Rico. No expenses were spared on the new Westin Ocean Villas at Rio Mar Beach. Created by the visionary founder of Reebok, Paul Fireman and Tishman Realty, these ultimately exclusive and well appointed resort accomodations are ideally situated nearby the Caribbean National Rain Forest, El Yunque. Surrounded by 500 acres of palm-lined beach front, the beautiful one-,two-and three-bedroom villas are connected by shuttle or short walk to the Tom and George Fazio Ocean Golf Coursce. As Marketing Director Larry Goldman put it: "Here we like to share the wealth. Every aspect of your vacation is prepared in advance, thanks to the personalized Online Conceierge Service designed by veteran hotel manager Philip Yu." Upon arrival at San Juan Airport, I was smoothly whisked away in a black Lincoln Continental, driven by well known percussionist Ralph Lopez. Lopez explained to me that Ocean Villas was now acknowledged to be the top of the line location anywhere on the island. Because Fireman vacations there himself, often accompanied by Reebok endorsed athletes such as the NBA Dream Team players and golf pros, it's nothing but the best for his guests. This includes, of course,The World's Largest Heavanly Beds (7 feet long), to accomodate the basketball stars. After a 25 minute drive from the airport, we were waved in by a guard. As soon as we entered the gates, I knew we had arrived in the closest thing to paradise. The giant Iguanas were unfazed by the black Lincoln. I lowered the window and could hear the sounds of the famous Coqui frogs and the surrounding tropical forrest. I was immediately struck by the palm lined beach and stunning landscaping. Reinhard Werthner, managing director/vice president explained to me that it was no accident that the beach was perfectly symmetrically lined with palms, beautiful foliage, sparkling clean sand and a uniquely designed Infinity Pool that appeared to extend indefinitely into the blue ocean. "It was a monster project to bring in the highest quality sand to build up our beach, plant the palms and foliage and the special attraction of our Infinity Pool," said Werthner with a wave of his hand. Originally from Germany, Werthner came to the Westin Corporation after spending more than 25 years managing exclusive hotels around the world for Hyatt and Marriott in Egypt, Germany, Manila, St. Croix, Palm Beach, San Francisco, New York and Chicago. He actually started his international career 30 years ago in Puerto Rico. "And so, with a combination of meticulous personal touches of a Bavarian 'Gast Haus' and the grandest flare possible with mega-corporation Westin & partners, all the finest dreams can be realized." he said." Dining: From casual outdoor to formal Four Diamond AAA Award in the Paleo, there are 12 restaurants on premises to choose from as well as theme lounges. The sumptuous breakfast buffet was amply stocked with excellent smoked salmon and fresl sliced fruits, juices, bagels, custom cooked omelets with seafood. Really fantastic. This same room in the villas is known as The Ocean Club. Lunch is served on the patio or in the air conditioned view room. At night, there is an amazing variety of grilled seafood creatively prepared. From the classic Ocean Club Surf and Turf to Blackened Sea Bass with Tropical Fruit Salsa, Seared Potato Crusted Red Snapper, a choice of fresh fish of the day cooked to order. The desserts were totally decadent. Every one of the restaurants at the Ocean Villas resort is different and a unique dining experience. It would take two weeks just to sample the on-premises foods ranging from Italian, Mexican, Asian, American, Sushi and Grilled Seafood. Every villa has a fully equipped kitchen with a convenience store in the lobby, stocked with everything from disposable cameras and film, and food items. The Ocean Villas Pantry is open around the clock. Room Service is 24 hours. Also noteworthy for dedicated golf players and tennis enthusiasts are the Har-Tru tennis courts and luxurious club house/pro shop connected to the Grille Room and one of the top two rated championship golf courses in the Caribbean, specially designed by Greg Norman, to conform to the curves of the coast line and flowing Mameyes River as it emerges from El Yunque rain forrest and meets the ocean. I had the signature 16th hole right outside my villa and could watch from my deck, the championship golf action. In addition to the beautiful River Golf Course, the Har-Tru courts and pro shop/Grille Room, there is a comprehensive dive shop, parasailing, kayaking on the Mameyes River, windsurfing and more. In fact, parents will be happy to know, there is a program for the kids from ages 4-12, called Club Iguana, which will keep children happy and active with supervised fun and educational activities seven days a week. There is even a water slide. There are several packages, such as The Caribbean Ultimate Unwind, and state-of-the-art corporate conference facilities, featuring the largest ballroom in the Caribbean. The friendly staff and management team go out of their way to cater to every imaginable detail and desire, 24 hours a day on the 500 acre resort. *For additional information, contact a travel agent or check the websites www.theoceanvillas.com and www.westinriomar.com for upcoming specials, or call (888) 625-4949.

Bob Popyk FOCUS column profiles AFM Member Jon Hammond

BOB POPYK of AFM's INTERNATIONAL MUSICIAN Magazine profiles JON
HAMMOND in his monthly motivational column: FOCUS !
*LISTEN TO HammondCast 19 HERE:

http://ia311529.us.archive.org/3/items/HammondCast_19/HammondCast19.mp3

Focus
International Musician
Whatever Happened to Those Jazz Clubs on Every Corner?
I live in a city of about 250,000 people. Vinnie Falcone, a member of
Local 369 (Las Vegas, NV) who played and conducted for Frank Sinatra,
and now works with Steve & Eydie and Robert Goulet, used to live and
work here.
That was about 35 years ago.
When he wasn't selling pianos for a local Hammond/Steinway dealer, he
probably played in almost every club within a 20-mile radius of here
at one time or another. There were tons of them.
Falcone and I talked about this just the other day. We came up with
the names of the clubs that used live music five to seven nights a
week. They could be found on almost on every street corner. Now they
are all gone. Jazz groups, blues bands, singles, duos, and trios were
always working; and if you came up with a new group you could, in all
likelihood, find a club owner who would give you a shot.
Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. It's tough to make a living
as a jazz musician today. But É you can make a living if you work at
it. Like most things, I think it's just a matter of wanting it badly
enough.
One thing I've found out from the readers of this column is that
musicians seem to be divided into two segments: 1) musicians who won't
play anything they don't like or any venue that doesn't suit them; and
2) musicians who need to work because they need to pay their bills and
find all kinds of ways to fill their calendar.
I still get occasional letters from readers who say that it's not
their fault that they are not getting enough work. I guess then the
logical question would be: whose fault is it?
I really appreciate the insight of those musicians who have creative
and interesting ways of finding work, and I sympathize with the
musicians who need to get out there and find gigs just to pay the
rent. I don't have all the answers, but a lot of our fellow AFM
members have some very good answers.
One in particular is Jon Hammond, a member of Local 802 (New York
City) and Local 6 (San Francisco, CA). Hammond has found a way to get
his own TV show broadcast on Time Warner Cable and RCN cable access,
he has produced a CD that gets airplay on jazz radio stations around
the world, and he plays at Music Performance Fund (MPF) gigs on a
regular basis on both coasts. He has booked himself on several
European tours, played jazz clubs in Germany and many other locations
in Europe, year after year, and has found a way to obtain instruments
from national manufacturers for endorsements, advertising, or trial.
Hammond is also a perfect example of "success being in the mind of the
beholder." When he put together his first self-booked German tour 20
years ago, he saved up enough money to fly to Europe on Pakistan
Airlines. He only had $50 in his pocket when he landed there. Hammond
came home 10 months later with $150 in his pocket. He was able to pay
for rent, food, and everything he needed during his time on the road
in Europe. He wasn't rich, but he was happy--and he firmly believes it
was also a terrific learning experience.
Over the ensuing years Hammond has performed with some of the world's
top jazz musicians, and he now lives in midtown Manhattan and plays
any and every job he can, on either coast. Money is not his prime
motivation. He just loves to play. He makes it work, through sheer
hard work, and he prides himself on being a union musician.
If you are a jazz musician, perhaps you might like to ask him some
questions of your own, and share some ideas. Hammond is very
approachable. Ask him about how he
put together his TV show, how he successfully gets radio airplay, how
he lands MPF gigs, and how, through it all, he always keeps money
coming in to pay the rent. He's found a way to do state-funded
programs in prisons, nursing home gigs, and casual dates in clubs.
(He's scrambled so much over the years that his new CD is called Late
Rent.) Hammond does not play for free. He finds ways to get paid. He
agrees that the only thing you get out of playing a free gig is the
opportunity to do another free gig.
I know jazz musicians can have a tough struggle, and it's true that
there simply are not as many places to play as there once were. But
that is not to say that jazz players can't find work.
Venues have changed, clubs have closed, but people still want to
listen to cool sounds. Jazz festivals in major cities are still
popular. Radio stations still offer jazz programs. PBS stations
showcase jazz artists in their programming. It's just not as easy to
make money at it as it once was, but you can still make a living.
I don't have all the answers. I think Hammond has some. I bet if you
brainstorm with your fellow AFM members who specialize in jazz, you
can go one better and come up with a lot of other ideas yourself. A
positive attitude is obviously going to play a big part, but if you
want to play jazz and make a few bucks, there are certainly ways to do
it. It really is a matter of wanting to be a jazz musician badly enough.
--Bob Popyk is a member of Local 78 (Syracuse, NY) and Local 47 (Los
Angeles).

That was a big honor for me to be profiled by main man Bob Popyk! I
always look forward to reading his articles

The World is Always On Jon Hammond for Alcatel-Lucent Technologies and Bell Labs worldwide campaign

Jon Hammond for Alcatel-Lucent / Bell Labs: "On stage, on television or on the radio waves
everyday I feel lucky because I’m ALWAYS ON! Jon HammondMusician, television personality and radio broadcaster Jon Hammond boarded a Concorde in 1981 to travel from New York to Paris at supersonic speed, and he never slowed down.Jon travels the world, touring in Europe and Asia two or three times each year while broadcasting his “HammondCast” morning radio show seven days a week. At home in the United States, Jon splits his time between New York City and San Francisco and performs four to five concerts each month at local hospitals, nursing homes and prisons. His cable television program, “The Jon Hammond Show,” is in its 25th year and going strong.“In my business, it’s essential to be contactable 24/7. I couldn't organize as much as I do without being ALWAYS ON.” Inspired by the Beatles and fascinated by the radio (he built a crystal radio at the age of five), Jon knew he was destined to be a musician. Although that’s a departure from tradition - Jon’s father and grandfather were physicians - Jon carries on the family business in his own way by performing in some of the very hospitals where his father once practiced medicine.“I've seen people get out of their wheelchairs and dance more times than I can count, so I’m happy I can make a difference playing for those who are less fortunate than me.”Jon has not forgotten those who opened doors for him when he was first starting out in music and broadcasting, and now he uses his radio and cable television shows to do the same for deserving young talent.Like Jon, we at Alcatel-Lucent are passionate about connecting people through communications technology. In our Bell Labs locations around the world, we’re working on new and exciting innovations in next-generation broadband technology to ensure people like Jon can find even more creative ways to share music, moments and memories.

TODD BRYANT WEEKS, MATTHEW PLUMMER, RUDY SHERIFF LAWLESS, KEITH DAMES, COLIN DEAN and more. Things are just getting rolling so I personally encourage professional jazz musicians and fans and supporters of America's Music and Musicians to get involved now.
Thanks for your support!
Sincerely,
Jon Hammond

Excerpt:
Fair Standards for NYC Music Clubs

June 16th, 2009
While larger and more financially stable clubs and cabaret spaces offer reasonable compensation to performing musicians, there are a host of smaller venues that do not. The abuse ranges from notorious pay-to-play venues to those that charge for the use of sound equipment or require musicians to guarantee an audience.

What can be done? What are “fair standards” for the treatment of musicians? Give us your feedback as we work to establish a “fair standards code” for these music venues.

Send an email to jazzdept@local802afm.org or call 212 245 4802 X185.
